A major area of research focus in the Ge lab @ National University of Singapore (NUS) is the development of base metals (Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) catalyzed hydroboration and hydrosilylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons to access synthetically versatile organosilanes and oragnoboron compounds, which are valuable reagents in organic synthesis due to their high stability and low toxicity. He will discuss a series of regio-, stereo-, or enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration and hydrosilylation of alkenes, alkynes, allenes, enynes, and conjugated dienes (some recent examples are shown in the figure below). The catalysts for these hydrofunctionalization reactions are generated from readily available and bench-stable Co(acac)2 and bisphosphine ligands.
Dr. GE Shaozhong was born in Anhui, China in 1980. He received his B.A. from University of Science and Technology of China in 2002, his M.S. from Åbo Akademi University in 2004, and his PhD from Univeristy of Groningen in Netherland under the mentorship of Prof. Bart Hessen. From 2010 to 2014, he worked for Prof. John F. Hartwig as a postdoc research associate, developing Ni- and Pd-catalyzed (asymmetric) C–C and C–N cross-coupling chemistry in University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of California at Berkeley. In January of 2015, he joined the Chemistry Department @ National University of Singapore as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Ge received NUS Young Investigator Award (2015), NUS Young Chemist Award (2017), Thieme Chemistry Journal Award (2018), ACP Lectureship Awards (2016-China, 2017-Japan, 2018-Korea), and CSJ Distinguished Lectureship Award from the Chemical Society of Japan (2019).
